Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) is an FDA-approved outpatient procedure performed using imaging guidance. A small laser fiber is inserted into the damaged vein through a nick in the skin. Laser energy applied to the inside of the vein seals it closed, causing the twisted varicose veins to shrink and improve in appearance. Healthy veins surrounding the closed vein will then restore the normal flow of blood.
Many doctors believe that this minimally invasive procedure
may become the standard for treating varicose veins. It can be
performed in the doctor’s office, usually takes less than
an hour, and leaves little or no scars. It is also highly effective
— the four-year data show a 93-95% success rate.
